UK Prison Overcrowding Crisis: 1,700 Prisoners ‌Released Early

According ⁢to foreign media reports, the British ‍government has released approximately 1,700 prisoners ahead of schedule due to severe overcrowding in prisons in England and Wales.

A total of 5,500 ‌people are expected to be released early from prisons in England‌ and Wales in ⁣September ⁢and October, as⁣ the prison system struggles to cope⁣ with the increasing number of⁢ inmates.

The British Ministry of Justice has announced that the plan will exclude prisoners serving four or more years for serious violent ⁢and sex crimes, as ‍well as those serving sentences for domestic violence and related crimes.

Martin Jones, ‍the chief ⁣royal inspector, has warned that the pressure⁢ on prisons is “extreme,” stating that the prisons are close ‌to 100% capacity. This is the highest number⁤ of prisoners in the ⁤country’s history.

Jones also expressed concerns that “some people who are released early will definitely reoffend,” highlighting that about one-third ‍of prisoners released every year will reoffend within a year.

Domestic violence charities have raised concerns ‍that the plan could compromise the safety of women and ⁤children, while ‌others fear⁢ it‌ will⁢ push the UK probation service to the brink of collapse.

The UK has the ⁤highest incarceration⁣ rate in Western Europe, and the construction of new prisons is ‍slow. The prison population in the UK ⁣is increasing, and the prison ⁣system is on ‍the verge‍ of being‌ overloaded. A British government report predicts that by 2027, the number of prisoners in England and Wales will ‌reach 95,000‍ to ⁣114,000, exceeding the prison capacity by 7% to 28%.

British Prime Minister Starmer has acknowledged that prison overcrowding is one of the biggest ⁣problems facing the new government, attributing it‌ to the “mess” left by the Conservative government. The Labour Party had promised to complete the construction plan of 14,000 new prison cells ⁤before the‌ general election.
