UK Prison Overcrowding Crisis: 1,700 Prisoners Released Early
According to foreign media reports, the British government has released approximately 1,700 prisoners ahead of schedule due to severe overcrowding in prisons in England and Wales.
A total of 5,500 people are expected to be released early from prisons in England and Wales in September and October, as the prison system struggles to cope with the increasing number of inmates.
The British Ministry of Justice has announced that the plan will exclude prisoners serving four or more years for serious violent and sex crimes, as well as those serving sentences for domestic violence and related crimes.
Martin Jones, the chief royal inspector, has warned that the pressure on prisons is “extreme,” stating that the prisons are close to 100% capacity. This is the highest number of prisoners in the country’s history.
Jones also expressed concerns that “some people who are released early will definitely reoffend,” highlighting that about one-third of prisoners released every year will reoffend within a year.
Domestic violence charities have raised concerns that the plan could compromise the safety of women and children, while others fear it will push the UK probation service to the brink of collapse.
The UK has the highest incarceration rate in Western Europe, and the construction of new prisons is slow. The prison population in the UK is increasing, and the prison system is on the verge of being overloaded. A British government report predicts that by 2027, the number of prisoners in England and Wales will reach 95,000 to 114,000, exceeding the prison capacity by 7% to 28%.
British Prime Minister Starmer has acknowledged that prison overcrowding is one of the biggest problems facing the new government, attributing it to the “mess” left by the Conservative government. The Labour Party had promised to complete the construction plan of 14,000 new prison cells before the general election.
