The United Kingdom and France have declined to join a United States military blockade of Iranian ports and the Strait of Hormuz, which went into effect on April 14, 2026. The decision follows the failure of face-to-face peace negotiations between the U.S. And Iran over the weekend.

The U.S. Military began enforcing the blockade at 10:00 a.m. ET on April 14, 2026. According to the U.S. Central Command, the operation is designed to be enforced impartially against all vessels of all nations entering or departing Iranian coastal areas and ports, including those on the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Gulf.

United Kingdom Position

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated on April 14, 2026, that the United Kingdom would not support the blockade. Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Starmer emphasized that the UK would not be drawn into the war with Iran without a clear lawful basis and a clear thought-through plan.

United Kingdom Position

Starmer indicated that the UK has faced considerable pressure to join the conflict but maintained that the primary British objective is the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. He noted that the UK has deployed minesweepers to the region, though he declined to discuss specific operational details, stating that military capabilities are focused on ensuring the strait is open.

U.S. Military Actions and Claims

President Donald Trump announced via Truth Social that the U.S. Has already obliterated 158 Iranian ships, claiming the Iranian Navy is laying at the bottom of the sea. He noted that a small number of fast attack ships were not targeted as they were not considered a significant threat.

Trump warned that any ships approaching the blockade would be immediately ELIMINATED using a system described as quick and brutal. In the same communication, the President claimed that 98.2% of drugs entering the U.S. By sea have stopped.

During an impromptu press conference at the White House on April 14, 2026, President Trump stated that appropriate parties had contacted the U.S. That morning expressing a desire to work out a deal following the implementation of the blockade.

International Context and Alliances

The U.S. Move has created a rift within NATO, as allies have refused to join the blockade of Iranian ports. In addition to the United Kingdom, France has also ruled out participating in the enforcement of the blockade.

The blockade is a response to the throttling of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, which was done in retaliation for the U.S.-Israel war against the country. This disruption of the key oil and gas shipping lane has caused energy prices to rise globally.

Broader Regional Conflict

The failure of U.S.-Iran talks coincides with ongoing tensions in the wider Middle East. In Washington, direct negotiations are expected between the Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors, facilitated by U.S. Top diplomat Marco Rubio.

These talks aim to discuss the possibility of higher-level direct negotiations. Lebanese authorities are seeking a ceasefire in Israel’s war with Hezbollah, an Iran-backed group. However, Israel has rejected a ceasefire, insisting that Hezbollah must be disarmed. Hezbollah has rejected the talks and stated it will not abide by any agreements reached.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has resulted in more than 2,000 deaths and the displacement of over one million people in Lebanon, including the deaths of approximately 500 medical workers, women, and children.
