UK lawyers Call for Israel Sanctions over Gaza “Genocide Risk”
Updated may 27, 2025
More than 800 lawyers, academics, and former judges in teh United Kingdom are urging the government to impose sanctions on israeli officials and take action to prevent potential genocide in Gaza. The legal experts’ open letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer calls for immediate steps to address what they describe as “serious violations of international law” by Israel.
The letter asserts that “genocide is being perpetrated in Gaza, or at a minimum, there is a serious risk of genocide occurring.” It also alleges war crimes, crimes against humanity, and violations of international humanitarian law. The signatories are pushing Starmer for swift action to prevent the “destruction of the palestinian people of Gaza.”
The legal figures cited comments by israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who expressed intentions to control and “cleanse” the Gaza Strip. The letter also references a recent statement by leaders from the UK, France, and Canada expressing concern over the suffering in Gaza and signaling potential action.
The group is demanding the British government uphold its international legal obligations by securing an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and ensuring the resumption of aid to Palestinians. They are also calling for sanctions on Israeli ministers and a review of trade ties with Israel, including the suspension of a closer UK-Israel partnership.
Last week, the UK government reportedly suspended negotiations for a new trade deal with Israel.

‘Unrelenting breaches of international law’
The letter also urges the UK to confirm it will execute arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) related to Israel’s actions in Gaza. The ICC has issued warrants for Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
“We, in the UK, cannot expect peace unless we fulfil our obligations under international law,” said Sir Alan Moses, a former appeals court judge and signatory of the letter.
Conor gearty, a professor of human rights law at the London School of Economics, said Israel’s “unrelenting breaches of international law” posed a threat to “the very future of international law itself,” adding, “imagine a world without rules: anarchy loosed upon the world.”
A previous letter from UK lawyers claimed the UK was violating international law by arming Israel. According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, the conflict has resulted in over 54,056 Palestinian deaths and 123,129 injuries. The Government Media Office estimates the death toll to be over 61,700, including those missing and presumed dead.
What’s next
The UK government is now under increasing pressure to respond to the lawyers’ demands and take concrete action regarding Israel’s conduct in Gaza. The call for sanctions and a review of trade relations coudl significantly impact the UK-Israel relationship.
