UK Backs Morocco’s western Sahara Autonomy Plan as ’Most Feasible’
Updated June 01, 2025
The United Kingdom considers Morocco’s autonomy proposal the most realistic path to resolving the Western Sahara conflict, according to Foreign Minister David Lammy. The long-standing dispute pits Morocco against the Algeria-backed Polisario Front, which seeks independence for the territory.
Lammy, after meeting with Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, told reporters that Morocco’s 2007 autonomy plan is the “most credible, viable and pragmatic basis for a lasting resolution of the dispute.” The UK, he added, will continue to support the resolution economically, regionally, and internationally.
This position makes Britain the third permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, after the United States and France, to endorse Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara. Bourita hailed the UK’s stance as historic, noting it contributes to the momentum for resolving the conflict. He also mentioned that UK investments in the territory are under consideration. The focus on the Western Sahara autonomy plan highlights the potential for regional stability and economic advancement.
The two nations also finalized agreements to collaborate on healthcare, innovation, port and water infrastructure, and procurement.
The UK will continue to act bilaterally, including economically, regionally and internationally in line with this position to support the resolution of the conflict,” Lammy said.
Lammy stated these deals would “ensure British businesses score big on football’s biggest stage,” as Morocco invests in infrastructure for the 2030 World Cup, co-hosted with Spain and Portugal.
