Pirates operating off the coast of Somalia have seized the cargo vessel Lutuf under the flag of Cameroon, which was transporting Turkish weaponry, satellite equipment, and communication gear destined for a military training center in Mogadishu, according to Associated Press reports published on August 21, 2026.
The hijacking occurred approximately six kilometers from the settlement of Marрайя on the eastern coast of Somalia, as detailed by 24.kg. The vessel belongs to the company Polar Movement Shipping. Following the seizure, eight pirates navigated the ship toward the coastline in the Puntland province.
Crew Composition and Immediate Aftermath
Ten crew members were aboard the Lutuf at the time of the capture, including six Indian nationals, two Serbian nationals, one Turkish national, and one Georgian national, according to Associated Press reporting cited by 24.kg.
As the situation developed near the Puntland coast, two Turkish vessels approached the hijacked ship. Turkish military helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles monitored the unfolding event from the air.
The following day, two individuals arrived at the pirate position aboard a small boat to deliver a consignment of the psychostimulant khat before returning to shore, according to 24.kg. Shortly after that delivery, an aerial strike targeted the vessel. The attack resulted in four fatalities and left two other individuals injured, though Associated Press notes that the identity of the party responsible for firing the projectile remains undetermined.

Regional Security Concerns
The incident highlights a broader resurgence of maritime security risks in the region. British authorities issued a formal warning regarding the escalating threat of piracy off the Somali coast, pointing to renewed activity in these vital shipping lanes.
Turkish authorities have not yet issued an official comment regarding the seizure of the cargo vessel or the subsequent airstrike, according to 24.kg.
