Russian Strikes in Ukraine Kill Four, Injure Dozens
Updated June 8, 2025
A fresh wave of Russian strikes pounded Ukraine early Friday, leaving death and destruction across several cities. The attacks, which targeted Kyiv, the Ternopil region, and Lutsk, resulted in at least four fatalities and numerous injuries, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Lutsk, in the Volyn region, bore the brunt of a missile and drone assault. Ukrainian authorities reported that 15 drones and six cruise missiles rained down on the city, triggering explosions and causing buildings to collapse. Residents reported hearing three powerful blasts around 4:30 a.m.
Yevheniia Kamienieva, a Lutsk resident, recounted the harrowing experience: “I saw with my own eyes how things were flying there and exploding.I was standing right here, and the blast wave pushed us into the hallway. Most people ran to the shelter.”
Alisa Yerofieieva, head of a local condominium association, added, “According to eyewitnesses who were outside, as unluckily we don’t have functional shelters here, it was a missile strike.”
Rescuers in Lutsk reported treating at least 16 people for injuries sustained in the attacks, which also ignited multiple fires. The State Emergency Service (SES) said that three of those killed were rescuers in Kyiv. In the capital, many residents sought refuge in metro stations as explosions rocked the city for hours. The SES also reported damage to administrative buildings, industrial sites, and vehicles.
Donetsk region police reported strikes in sloviansk, where Russian drones damaged buildings, more than a dozen vehicles, and a service station. No casualties were reported in that city.
Russia’s defense ministry claimed the strikes were retaliation for “terrorist acts by the Kyiv regime,” asserting that only military installations were targeted. Kyiv disputes this, citing mounting civilian casualties.
The role of recent events is notable. These attacks followed U.S. president Donald Trump’s statement that Russian President Vladimir Putin would “have to respond” to Ukraine’s Operation Spider’s Web, which targeted Russian warplanes at military airbases the previous weekend. Zelenskyy has blamed Russia’s refusal to agree to a ceasefire in May for the latest escalation in the conflict, now in its fourth year. the casualties continue to rise as the strikes intensify.
What’s next
The international community is watching closely as tensions escalate. Further retaliatory actions from both sides are possible, potentially leading to a dangerous new phase in the conflict.
