Drones, reportedly leveraging⁢ open source software, executed a coordinated attack on Sunday, ‍targeting Russian air bases and inflicting damage on⁢ Russia’s strategic long-range bomber fleet. The security Services of Ukraine (SBU) claimed duty for the “Operation Spider web,” a meticulously planned assault that took over a year⁣ to prepare.

The drone strikes hit airfields in Belaya, Olenya, and Ivanovo, deep within Russia. The drones utilized ⁤ArduPilot, an open source⁢ autopilot software initially ⁤designed for hobbyist drones.

Chris Anderson,⁣ a creator of ⁣ArduPilot, expressed astonishment⁣ at the software’s use in the attacks. He noted ‍the software was launched ‍from his basement 18 years ago. Jason Short,another co-creator,echoed this sentiment,stating he never anticipated‍ such an outcome.

ArduPilot, named after the arduino hardware it was initially paired with, emerged from DIYdrones.com, a website Anderson launched in 2007. The initial system ⁤was built using a Lego Mindstorms set.
