updated June 02, 2025
Ukraine conducted a meaningful drone attack on Russia, targeting military air bases in what officials are calling Operation “Spider’s Web.” The operation, which reportedly took over a year to prepare, involved the covert transport of drones into Russian territory to strike strategic cruise missiles and other aircraft.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy lauded the mission as “brilliant,” noting its planning spanned 18 months. He also claimed the operation’s “office” was located near an FSB headquarters within Russia.
Russia’s defense ministry confirmed the strikes, stating that five airbases were targeted but that the attacks were “successfully repelled.” However, ukraine claims ample damage was inflicted, including the destruction of 34% of Russia’s strategic bombers, estimating losses at $7 billion. These claims are yet to be independently verified.
According to a source within Ukraine’s SBU security service, the coordinated drone attacks targeted 41 Russian aircraft, including Tu-95 and Tu-22 strategic bombers, as well as A-50 radar detection and command aircraft. The attack represents Ukraine’s longest-range mission of the war, with drones striking targets thousands of kilometers from ukrainian territory, including the Olenya airbase in the Arctic and the Belaya airbase in eastern Siberia.
Russia has condemned the attacks as ”terror attacks.”
“today, a brilliant operation was carried out. The readiness took over a year and a half. What’s moast interesting, is that the ‘office’ of our operation on russian territory was located directly next to FSB headquarters in one of their regions.”
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian President
The Russian defense ministry stated the drone strikes originated from areas close to the airfields. They added that several aircraft caught fire but the fires were extinguished.
Zelenskyy saeid 117 drones were used in the operation. He also reiterated a proposal for a “full and unconditional ceasefire,” urging international sanctions to pressure Russia to end its offensive.
What’s next
Zelenskyy affirmed Ukraine’s intent to continue its offensive. The drone operation has sparked strong reactions within Russian military circles, with some bloggers describing it as a “black day for aviation,” potentially impacting upcoming peace talks.
