Fighting Rages in Donbas and Kursk as Zelenskyy Praises Soldiers’ Resilience

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a somber New Year’s Day address, detailing the ongoing Russian assault on Ukrainian positions. Despite the holiday, fighting raged unabated, with Russian forces launching relentless attacks in the Donbas region and Kursk Oblast.

“Every day – on December 31st and January 1st – there where constant Russian attacks in the Donetsk region,” Zelenskyy stated. “For more then a day, there have been heavy attacks in the direction of Pokrovsk, kurakhove, and particularly severe fighting in the Lyman and Vremivka directions.”

The president highlighted the fierce resistance of Ukrainian troops, who are holding their ground against overwhelming odds.”In the Kursk region, our units continue to defend their positions – repelling more than 30 russian attacks every day,” Zelenskyy said.

He also emphasized the ongoing efforts to bolster defenses in the strategically vital Kherson region, which was liberated from Russian occupation in November.Zelenskyy concluded his address by expressing his gratitude to the Ukrainian soldiers bravely defending their homeland. “I want to thank every Ukrainian soldier who is fighting, who is holding the line and protecting our country,” he said.

Ukrainians Stand Strong: A Conversation on the New Year’s Frontlines

amelia: Hey, did you hear Zelenskyy’s New Year’s address? It was pretty sobering.

Ben: I caught snippets of it – wasn’t there some talk about intense fighting? It must be tough to celebrate under those circumstances.

Amelia: It’s unreal. He was talking about continuous Russian attacks in the Donbas, especially around pokrovsk and Kurakhove. The battle for Lyman and Vremivka is apparently still raging very fiercely.

Ben: Wow, those are some of the key areas in eastern Ukraine. It seems like Russia isn’t letting up. Do we know how Ukrainian soldiers are holding up?

Amelia: Zelenskyy specifically praised their resilience. He mentioned that Ukrainian units in the Kursk region, which is actually in Russia itself, are fending off over 30 attacks every single day. That’s just crazy dedication.

Ben: That’s amazing. I imagine those soldiers are weary both physically and mentally.

Amelia: Absolutely. And they’re not just focusing on the east.He also said they’re strengthening defenses in Kherson, even though they liberated that region from Russian control a while back.

Ben: That makes sense, you can never be too careful. Europe has seen what happens when Russia digs in. It’s a hard road ahead for everyone.

Amelia: It is, but Zelenskyy ended his address by directly thanking all the soldiers on the frontlines. He said, “I want to thank every Ukrainian soldier who is fighting, who is holding the line, and protecting our country.” It was a powerful message, a reminder of the human cost of this war.

Ben: It puts things into outlook, without a doubt. Hopefully, 2023 will bring some positive changes, but for now, those soldiers deserve all our respect and support.
