Russia Intensifies Attacks on Ukraine, Targeting Energy Infrastructure

Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine overnight on February 3, 2026, striking energy facilities across the country and injuring at least nine people, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The assault involved 71 missiles and 450 drones, including nearly 300 Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the Air Force reported. The strikes impacted cities throughout Ukraine, including those located far from the front lines.

This renewed offensive signals the end of a brief period where Moscow had temporarily paused strikes on Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure. The pause, which lasted until February 1, 2026, had been the subject of discussion following an appeal from U.S. President Donald Trump, who reportedly asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to refrain from attacking Kyiv.

Speaking at a joint news conference with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte in Kyiv, Zelensky stated that Russia had disregarded efforts by its U.S. Partners to establish a weeklong truce on attacks against energy infrastructure. “In fact, (the energy truce) began on Friday night (January 30), and tonight (February 3), the Russians, in our view, broke their promise,” Zelensky said.

The attack on Kyiv was particularly significant, with reports of multiple residential buildings being struck. Earlier, on February 12, 2026, Kyiv also came under a massive attack by Russian missiles, according to reports, knocking out power and heat to thousands of Ukrainians.

The recent escalation in attacks comes after a period where most Russian aerial attacks had been aimed at electricity infrastructure, as reported in November 2025. The largest attack on Kyiv in almost three weeks occurred then, injuring at least 35 people and killing six.

The Kremlin had previously indicated it would pause strikes on energy facilities, but only until February 1. The resumption of attacks suggests a shift in strategy, potentially indicating a more aggressive approach to disrupting Ukraine’s capabilities as winter continues.

Beyond the immediate impact on energy supplies and civilian safety, the attacks also raise concerns about the broader geopolitical implications. Russia is currently facing casualties and broken communications, alongside a total oil ban, according to recent reports.
