Kursk, Russia – In a daring move, Ukrainian forces have launched a multi-pronged offensive into Russia’s Kursk region, catching Russian troops off guard. The assault, confirmed by both Ukrainian and Russian officials, marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.

“In the Kursk region, the Russians are very worried as they were attacked from several directions and this surprised them,” said Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s center for countering disinformation, in a Telegram post. “The defense forces are working,” he added, hinting at the success of the operation.

While the Russian Ministry of Defense acknowledged the Ukrainian attack,claiming to be repelling the advance,reports from Russian military bloggers suggest that Russian forces are facing significant pressure.The Ukrainian General Staff has yet to officially comment on the offensive. Their latest report focused on Russian attacks in Kursk, detailing 33 artillery bombardments, 17 airstrikes, and 25 anti-tank missile launches in the past 24 hours.This offensive comes after months of intense fighting in kursk. Ukraine initially captured over 1,100 square kilometers of territory in the region in august 2023. However, a Russian counteroffensive, reportedly aided by North korean troops, has since reclaimed more than half of the lost ground.

As of late 2023, Ukrainian forces reportedly controlled approximately 460 square kilometers in Kursk.

The offensive coincides with a renewed wave of drone attacks between the two sides. Ukraine claims to have downed 61 out of 103 Russian drones targeting eight regions, while Russia reports destroying the same number of Ukrainian drones.
