Ukraine military Starshield access restored after ten-day outage
- Ukraine's military access to the Starshield satellite network has been restored, ending a ten-day restriction that left frontline drone operators without reliable internet connectivity.

Ukraine’s military access to the Starshield satellite network has been restored, ending a ten-day restriction that left frontline drone operators without reliable internet connectivity. Defense Minister Evgeniy Khmara confirmed to reporters that the military-grade system appears to be operating normally again, though officials are still running tests and have received no official explanation for the sudden outage.
The disruption heavily impacted military operations across eastern Ukraine, where ground units depend on the network to pilot fast-moving explosives and interceptors. According to the Wall Street Journal, Elon Musk ordered SpaceX to throttle the access after claiming Ukraine violated terms of service by launching offensive drone strikes. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the restoration in a video posted to X, thanking American partners and lawmakers who intervened during the standoff.
Ten-Day Drone Disruption Triggers Interventions
During the ten-day restriction period, Ukrainian drones lost connectivity whenever they reached speeds of roughly 100 miles per hour. That drop in service caused operators to lose control of some aircraft entirely, while forcing others to slow down and become highly vulnerable to enemy fire.
President Donald Trump reportedly called SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and asked him to restore the service. In an interview on October 14 with Piers Morgan, Zelenskyy called the Starlink slowdown a big mistake that would cause significant human losses. Trump told reporters on October 19 that he did not know who ordered the throttle and wanted to find out.
Musk Defends SpaceX Actions on X
Elon Musk defended the decision on social media, writing on X that any limits on speed or usage are ultimately decided by the United States military and the president. Musk asserted that the Ukrainian military violated terms of service by using the network for offensive drone strikes to kill people, prompting the company to close that loophole. At the same time, Musk acknowledged the critical nature of the infrastructure by stating that the front line would collapse immediately if the system were turned off.

The restrictions followed rising tensions earlier in the month after Ukraine targeted Russian energy facilities. Those attacks coincided with public criticism from both Musk and Trump regarding Zelenskyy. Musk posted that Zelensky had gone too far on October 10, while Trump pursued policies to ease high gas prices that spiked following a United States attack on Iran in February.
Testing Continues Along Frontlines
While Ukrainian officials confirmed that connectivity has returned to normal, testing of the Starshield hardware is ongoing to ensure full operational stability. The resolution arrives as Russian forces increase bombardments against Kyiv ahead of what military analysts expect to be a brutal winter phase of the conflict.

I thank all Americans and all our partners who took this seriously and truly helped — members of Congress, senators, all the media, the State Department, and the President.
