Zelensky Doubts Russia’s Commitment as Peace ⁣Talks Approach in Istanbul

⁢ Updated May 31, 2025
⁣

As a new⁤ round of ‍ peace talks between Ukraine and⁢ Russia looms in Istanbul, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has voiced skepticism about Russia’s dedication to achieving⁤ a meaningful resolution. Moscow has confirmed it will send a delegation to the talks on Monday.

Zelensky stated that Moscow is “doing everything it can to ensure the next possible meeting is fruitless.” He emphasized the need for a⁢ clear agenda and proper⁢ readiness for⁢ any meeting to be productive. Ukraine, he added, has already⁢ submitted its proposals to Russia, reiterating its ⁣”readiness ‌for a full and ⁤unconditional‌ ceasefire.” The ukraine-Russia conflict ‌ has been ongoing since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Kremlin ‍spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated that ‌Russia’s conditions for a ceasefire would be discussed ‌in Turkey. These ceasefire proposals have⁤ not been made public.

The initial ‌round of negotiations‌ in Istanbul two weeks ⁢prior yielded no critically important breakthroughs, ‍though‍ a prisoner of⁣ war exchange was ⁤achieved.

Adding to the tension, both sides reported explosions Friday night and Saturday morning. Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the Kherson region’s ‍military administration, reported three deaths and 10 injuries due to Russian strikes‌ on critical infrastructure, social infrastructure, and residential⁣ areas. one death was also reported in the Sumy region. Explosions were ⁤also ⁢reported in‌ Kharkiv and izyum, with at least one⁢ injury.

In Russia’s Kursk region, ‍at least 14 people sustained injuries in an explosion, according to acting local governor ‌Alexander Khinshtein and TASS, the state-owned news agency.

“For a meeting to be meaningful, its agenda must be clear, and the negotiations must be properly prepared,” Zelensky said.

Ukrainian Foreign minister ⁣Andrii Sybiha reiterated Kyiv’s demand for an unconditional ceasefire as a prerequisite for broader negotiations. “We are interested in⁤ seeing ⁢these meetings continue because we want the war to end ‌this year,” Sybiha said during⁤ a press ⁤conference with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan.

While Presidents Putin ⁣and Zelensky are not expected to attend the upcoming⁢ talks, Fidan ⁢expressed Turkey’s hope to eventually host a high-level summit involving the two leaders and former U.S. President Donald Trump.

What’s⁢ next

Negotiations in Istanbul are set to proceed, with both sides holding firm on key demands. The ‍success of these talks remains uncertain, as both Ukraine and Russia ⁣continue to report military actions and‍ casualties.
