Ukraine Shoots Down 27 Drones in Overnight Russian Attack
Kyiv, ukraine - Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted 27 out of 49 Russian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) during a large-scale overnight attack on December 16th, according to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The assault, launched from Russia‘s Bryansk and Oryol oblasts, began around 1:00 am local time and primarily involved Shahed drones and other types of UAVs. ukrainian forces responded with a multi-layered defense, utilizing anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare divisions, and mobile fire groups from both the Air Force and Defense Forces.
By 8:30 am, the Air Force confirmed the downing of 27 attack drones across six oblasts: Chernihiv, Sumy, Cherkasy, Khmelnytskyi, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk. Approximately 19 additional drones were prevented from reaching their targets, with three UAVs still unaccounted for.
This latest attack is part of Russia’s ongoing campaign of daily airstrikes targeting residential areas and civilian infrastructure across Ukraine. Since October 2022, Russia has systematically targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with extensive missile and drone assaults, aiming to disrupt civilian life, particularly during the harsh winter months.
Kharkiv Oblast Bears the Brunt
The Kharkiv Oblast experienced multiple strikes throughout the day. A missile strike in Kharkiv’s Kyiv district damaged a sports complex, shattering windows and doors, and injuring a 48-year-old woman. In the Kupiansk district, a private house was damaged, injuring a 54-year-old woman.
Russian forces also launched ten assault attempts near the settlements of Vysoka Yaruga, Tykhe, and Vovchansk in the Kharkiv Oblast. Ukrainian forces successfully repelled these attacks.
Other Regions Under Fire
The Kherson Oblast endured heavy bombardment, with Russian forces targeting critical infrastructure and residential areas in numerous settlements. An intercity bus was also damaged,resulting in two people being wounded.
In the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast,a kamikaze drone struck the Myrivska community. Additional artillery shelling was reported in Nikopol and the Pokrovska community.These relentless attacks underscore the ongoing threat faced by Ukrainian civilians and the critical need for continued international support.
