NOVOSHAHTINSK, Russia – A Ukrainian strike targeted the Novo Shakhtinsky oil refinery in Russia’s Rostov region overnight, causing a fire at the facility, according to a statement from the Ukrainian general Staff.
The refinery, the only one operating in the Rostov region, is crucial for supplying fuel to russian military forces, the statement said.
The attack reportedly hit the catalytic cracking unit (ELOU-AVT-2.5) at the refinery, which specializes in producing various fuels, including diesel, gasoline, and mazut. The facility has a designed processing capacity of 7.5 million tons of oil per year.
This strike comes amidst reports of a large-scale drone attack on Russia earlier today. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have intercepted and destroyed 84 drones, including 36 over the Rostov region.
Ukrainian Strike Cripples Key Russian Oil Refinery
NewsDirectory3 Exclusive Interview:
ND3: Dr.Petrova, thank you for speaking with us today. A Ukrainian strike has reportedly hit the Novo Shakhtinsky oil refinery in Russia, a facility crucial for supplying fuel to Russian military forces. Can you elaborate on the significance of this target?
Dr. Petrova: This refinery is the sole operational facility of its kind in the entire Rostov region. It plays a vital role in providing diesel, gasoline, and other essential fuels to Russian troops stationed in the area.Disrupting its operations significantly hampers the Russian military’s logistical capabilities in the region.
ND3: The Ukrainian General Staff claims the strike targeted a specific unit specializing in fuel production – the catalytic cracking unit. What are the implications of hitting this specific area?
Dr.Petrova: Targeting the catalytic cracking unit is a strategic move. This unit is responsible for converting crude oil into usable fuels. Damaging it directly impacts the refinery’s ability to produce the essential fuels required by the Russian military.
ND3: We understand the refinery has a processing capacity of 7.5 million tons of oil annually. What impact could this strike have on overall Russian fuel supplies and military operations?
Dr. Petrova: The immediate impact will be felt most acutely in the Rostov region. The disruption of this refinery will hinder the Russian military’s ability to sustain ongoing operations in the area. While the overall impact on Russia’s fuel supply chain may be mitigated through alternative sources, this strike undoubtedly disrupts the logistical network and demonstrates Ukraine’s ability to target key infrastructure deep within Russian territory.
ND3: This follows reports of a broader drone attack targeting various locations in Russia. Is there a connection between these events?
Dr. Petrova: While a direct connection remains unconfirmed, both events highlight Ukraine’s increasing capacity to conduct long-range strikes within Russia. These actions, whether coordinated or coincidental, underscore the vulnerability of Russian infrastructure and the evolving nature of the conflict.
