Amid fears of a renewed Russian ground assault,Ukraine has ordered the evacuation⁢ of 11 villages ‌in the Sumy region, which borders russia. The move comes as Russia claims to have captured Vodolagy and amassed over 50,000 troops near the border, according to Kyiv.

These evacuations precede potential peace talks in Istanbul. Washington has urged both nations to resolve the ⁢three-year conflict. Russia confirmed it would send a delegation to Istanbul. Though, Ukraine has not yet committed, insisting that the Kremlin‌ first provide its terms for peace.

president Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Moscow on Friday ‍of actively sabotaging the potential meeting by withholding these terms. The regional administration cited ‌”constant threat to civilian life” from‌ shelling as the reason for⁣ the evacuations within 19 miles of the Russian border. Andriy ‍Demchenko, a spokesman for Ukraine’s border guard⁤ service, indicated Thursday that Russia was preparing ‍to “attempt an attack” on ‌Sumy. A total of 213 settlements in the region face evacuation orders.

The conflict, initiated by russia in February 2022, has caused tens of thousands of deaths and widespread destruction.Currently, Russian forces control‍ approximately one-fifth of Ukraine, including Crimea, seized in 2014, and claim to have ‍annexed five Ukrainian regions.

While U.S. President Donald Trump has led diplomatic efforts, both Kyiv and Moscow accuse each other of obstructing peace. The kremlin proposed further Istanbul ‍negotiations following a ⁤may 16 meeting that primarily resulted in a prisoner-of-war exchange. Russia plans to present its peace memorandum in person on Monday.

Ukraine anticipates the memorandum will contain unacceptable demands, such as ceding territory and abandoning NATO aspirations. ⁢Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s UN ambassador, suggested the memorandum might call for ‍halting Western arms supplies to Kyiv and ending Ukraine’s military mobilization.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, maintaining relations with ⁢both Zelenskyy and Russian President vladimir putin, has emerged as a key mediator.According to Anadolu, ⁣the Turkish state news agency, Erdogan urged‍ both sides to send “strong delegations” to the Istanbul talks during a Friday call with ‍Zelenskyy. Turkey has offered to host a summit between Putin, Zelenskyy, ‍and Trump, an offer the Kremlin⁢ declined. Putin has consistently rejected calls for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire.

What’s next

The world awaits the outcome of the potential Istanbul⁣ talks, with the hope that both sides will engage constructively to de-escalate the conflict and find a path toward lasting peace. The next few days will be critical in determining whether a diplomatic solution is possible.
