KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia has shifted its focus to⁤ producing more ⁢ballistic missiles than cruise missiles, according ⁣to a Ukrainian Air⁤ Force official. This ⁤change ‍comes as⁢ Russia seeks to⁣ overcome the effectiveness of Western-supplied air ⁢defense systems.

Ballistic⁣ Missile Modernization

Yuri ‍Ignat, head of the communications department of ⁤the Air Force‌ Command of‍ the Armed ⁤Forces of⁢ Ukraine, ⁣stated that Russia is modernizing‌ its ballistic missiles⁣ to make them ‌harder to ⁢intercept. He noted that the tactics ⁤of request are changing as‌ well.

“The enemy modernizes his technique,” Ignat said. He pointed⁣ out that the ⁤shahed ‌drones, used since ⁢the ‌fall of⁤ 2022,have undergone modifications to their⁤ guidance ⁣and satellite navigation systems.⁤ “The enemy also modernizes the ballistics.”

Impact of Patriot Systems

Ignat noted that Ukraine’s air defenses, notably the Patriot⁤ systems, initially ‌showed ‌success against Russian Kinzhal ‌and Iskander missiles. However, ⁣Russia is adapting. “Now it ‌is more⁢ arduous to‌ do,because the enemy ⁢also modernizes ballistic missiles,” Ignat ‍said.

Ukraine is ‍sharing data on Russian missile innovations with Western partners to improve the effectiveness of weapons systems like patriot, iris-T, NASAMS, and SAMP/T.

Shift ⁤in Missile Usage

“As the beginning of 2024, if you take all the missiles, (Russia) increased⁣ the percentage of ballistics,” Ignat said. “Winged missiles⁢ as a percentage is less, and there are more ballistic missiles as the enemy realized that‌ the ballistic missiles are ‌knocking down the Petriots.” He added ⁢that Ukraine understands the need for more air defense systems, especially Patriot batteries, for better protection.

Recent Missile Attack on Kyiv

During a recent overnight attack, Ukrainian ⁣air defenses reportedly performed well, according⁤ to ‌Ignat. However, some missiles‌ still reached their⁤ targets.

“Sadly, there were only one of the ballistic missiles, which ⁣were⁤ 6. The rest were, unfortunately,‍ there is a hit. This is⁣ Kiev region,”

Yuri Ignat, Head of Communications Department, Air Force command of ‍the Armed Forces of Ukraine

Details of the Attack

Ukrainian forces claimed to ‌have shot down 13 ‍out‍ of 23‌ missiles in the overnight attack, including 6 Iskander-M ballistic missiles launched⁤ from the Bryansk region.

Following the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy⁤ criticized the international community ‍for allowing‍ Russia to “terrorize” the civilian population.

Russia’s Ballistic Missile Shift: A Q&A on The Latest Developments

welcome to this Q&A-style deep dive into‌ Russia’s recent ‌strategic shifts⁤ in missile production, based on recent reports from Ukraine. We’ll explore ‌the key ⁤changes, their implications, and the ongoing efforts to counter them.

What’s the Main Takeaway from Recent reports?

According to a high-ranking Ukrainian air Force official, Russia has transitioned from ⁣prioritizing cruise missile production to focusing on the production of ballistic missiles. This shift aims to overcome the effectiveness of ⁢Western air defense systems, such as the Patriot missile systems.

Who Provided This Facts,⁤ and What’s Their Role?

The information comes from Yuri Ignat, the Head of the Communications Department of the‍ Air force⁣ Command of the armed Forces of Ukraine. His ‍position provides him with ⁣direct insight into the situation.

Why ⁤is Russia changing⁢ Its Missile Production Strategy?

The shift towards ballistic missiles is largely a response to the success of Western-supplied air defense systems like the ⁤Patriot. ⁣Ballistic missiles are designed to be more difficult to intercept, ‍allowing Russia to better penetrate Ukrainian air defenses.

How⁣ is Russia Modernizing Its Ballistic Missiles?

According to Yuri Ignat,Russia is actively modernizing its ballistic missiles to make them ⁤harder to intercept. This includes changes to tactical approaches and modifications to guidance and satellite navigation systems. The ⁣article specifically mentions how the guidance systems of the shahed ⁤drones, also known as “kamikaze⁤ drones,” have been updated as 2022. Ballistic missiles are undergoing similar modernizations.

What Impact Have Patriot Systems Had on Russian Missile Strikes?

Initially, Ukrainian air defenses, notably the Patriot systems, were prosperous in intercepting Russian Kinzhal and ‍Iskander missiles. Though, Russia is adapting to this success, making it more⁣ challenging for the defense systems to effectively intercept⁣ the newer generation of Ballistic and other guided missiles.

What Are the Differences Between ballistic and Cruise Missiles?

| Feature‍ ⁢ ‍ | Ballistic Missiles ⁢ ‍ ⁢ ⁣ | Cruise Missiles ⁣ ⁤ ⁤ ‍⁢ ⁣ |

| —————- | ————————————————- | ———————————————– |

| trajectory | High arcing, goes into space during⁣ flight ⁤ | Stays within⁢ the atmosphere ‌⁤ ‌ ⁣ |

| Speed ‌ ⁣| Generally faster (Mach⁤ 5+) ‍ ‍ | Slower (subsonic or supersonic) ‍ ⁢ |

| Guidance |⁣ Inertial, GPS, and terminal guidance ‌ ⁢ ‌ | GPS, terrain⁣ mapping, radar |

| range ⁢ | often longer ‍range ⁣‌ ‌ ⁣ | Shorter ⁢to medium range ‍ ⁤ |

| Interception | More difficult due to speed and trajectory ⁤ | Easier to intercept⁣ due‍ to slower speed and lower flight path |

How Has the Balance Between Ballistic and Cruise Missiles Changed?

The article highlights that, as of the beginning of 2024, Russia has notably increased the proportion of ballistic missiles in its arsenal. Winged (cruise) missiles now represent a smaller percentage. This adjustment ⁤demonstrates a strategic response to the effectiveness ⁢of Ukrainian air defenses against cruise missiles.

What Happened During the Recent⁢ Missile Attack on Kyiv?
