Ukraine War: Russia Offensive in Dnipropetrovsk
Russia Pushes Into Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine, Marking Territorial Escalation
Updated June 08, 2025
Russian forces are advancing into Ukraine’s dnipropetrovsk region, according to Moscow, marking the first push into the eastern industrial area during the three-year offensive. This escalation occurs amid stalled peace negotiations, where Russia demands Kyiv’s troop withdrawal, cessation of Western arms support, and abandonment of NATO aspirations.
Dnipropetrovsk, not among the five regions Russia claims, is a vital mining and industrial center. Further Russian advances could severely impact Ukraine’s struggling military and economy. Before the offensive, the region had an estimated population of 3 million, with 1 million residing in the capital, dnipro.
The Russian Defense Ministry stated its tank units reached the western border of the Donetsk People’s Republic and are advancing in the Dnipropetrovsk region. this advance represents a strategic blow to Kyiv after months of battlefield setbacks. Ukraine has not yet responded to Russia’s statement.
In 2022, Moscow claimed annexation of Donetsk, kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia regions, despite not fully controlling them. It seized Crimea in 2014. Russia demands recognition of these regions as part of Russia, a condition Kyiv repeatedly rejects.
Strategic setback
The conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, millions displaced, and widespread devastation across eastern Ukraine.Until now, Ukraine had not fought within Dnipropetrovsk in over a decade of conflict. Military personnel indicated Russia could advance quickly in the relatively flat region, which offers fewer natural obstacles for Ukrainian defenses. Dnipro has been subjected to persistent Russian strikes, including the use of the “experimental” Oreshnik missile in late 2024, allegedly targeting an aeronautics facility. Earlier on Sunday, local officials reported one death in the region due to an attack on a village near the frontlines, highlighting the ongoing Russian strikes and the territorial escalation in the Dnipropetrovsk region.
