Russian strikes have intensified across Ukraine, resulting in at least four confirmed deaths and over 30 injuries. The attacks, utilizing drones and missiles, are prompting evacuations from damaged residential areas and driving civilians into bomb shelters as ceasefire talks stall.
Recent Escalation in Attacks
Moscow has launched a series of large-scale drone and missile attacks, coinciding with a standstill in ceasefire negotiations mediated by the United States. The attacks are targeting civilian infrastructure and residential buildings, causing widespread damage and displacement. An AFP reporter in Kharkiv witnessed the evacuation of residents from a damaged building, with many seeking refuge in basements alongside their pets. The eastern Sumy region reported two fatalities, while the Black Sea region of Odesa and the southern Kherson region each confirmed one death.

Damage and Response
Over 40 people have been wounded in the recent wave of attacks, with the majority of injuries reported in the eastern regions of Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk. Zaphorizhzhia, a major industrial city, was also targeted in a late-morning strike.
The Ukrainian air force reports that Russia launched 101 drones and four missiles, successfully intercepting 75 of the drones. Despite the interceptions, the attacks have caused meaningful damage and disruption.
Calls for International Support
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urgently appealed to Kyiv‘s allies for increased deliveries of air defense systems. He emphasized the critical need for enhanced protection against ongoing aerial assaults.
Andriy Yermak, head of Zelensky’s office, called for more robust sanctions against Russia to disrupt its access to weapons components. “The West must realize: Russia’s growing weapons production only brings closer the day when they’ll be used not only against Ukraine,” Yermak stated on social media. He warned that Russia’s increased weapons capabilities pose a broader threat to international security.
Stalled Peace Talks and Russian Demands
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has surpassed three years, with Moscow presenting maximalist demands for a ceasefire. These demands include the cession of four territories currently partially controlled by Russian forces. The uncompromising nature of these demands has contributed to the current impasse in negotiations.
Russian Claims of Drone Interceptions
The Russian defense ministry claims to have shot down 91 Ukrainian drones overnight, including eight in the Moscow region and the majority in regions bordering Ukraine. These claims have not been independently verified.
Recent Large-Scale Attack on Kyiv
On Friday, Russia launched its largest drone and missile barrage on Ukraine as the beginning of the invasion in February 2022. The attack involved 530 drones and approximately a dozen missiles targeting Kyiv, resulting in at least two deaths. This escalation underscores the intensifying conflict and the urgent need for a resolution.
