KYIV, Ukraine – Amid ongoing mobilization efforts, Ukraine’s military may call up men over the age of 50, but these individuals are generally assigned to non-combat roles, according to legal experts.
Sergei Lankin, a lawyer, told UNIAN that while the draft age extends to 60, men in their 50s are typically not deployed to the front lines.Instead, the focus is on utilizing their experience and skills in support positions.
Legal Framework for Mobilization
Ukrainian law stipulates that men between 25 and 60 are subject to military registration and potential mobilization. This means men over 50 can receive a summons, undergo a medical examination by a military medical commission, and have their military records assessed.
Ground Forces Directive
While not legally mandated, a 2024 directive from the commander of the Ground Forces advises against deploying men aged 50 to 60 in combat units. This guidance reflects a practical consideration of the physical demands of frontline service.
Rear Positions and Support Roles
Lankin explained that men in this age group are often better suited for roles in support, territorial recruitment centers and social support (TCC and SP),military educational institutions, and logistics units. Many individuals over 50 may have pre-existing health conditions or injuries that limit their suitability for combat.
“In practice, recruitment centers do not actively examine men aged 57-58,” Lankin said, ”because in general their mobilization will not bring any effective results, and thay are close to the maximum age and will be able to quit the service on this basis or for health reasons, as often.”
Contract Service vs. mobilization
According to Lankin, men over 50 who volunteer for contract service may have more say in their assigned position. However, those who are mobilized generally do not have the option to choose their specialization. They are typically sent to training centers were their skills are assessed and a suitable role is resolute.
The lawyer added that patrols have been ordered to check military accounting documents when men are in contact with men.
