Ukraine‘s Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed optimism on Sunday, March 2, 2025, about repairing his relationship with US President Donald Trump following a confrontational encounter in the Oval Office.he emphasized, however, that further discussions need to occur privately.
amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions, Zelenskiy reaffirmed Ukraine’s firm stance: it will not cede any territory to Russia as part of any potential peace agreement. He also conveyed Ukraine’s continued interest in finalizing a minerals deal with the US. Moreover, he highlighted a recent discussion with European leaders regarding a draft peace plan intended for submission to the US, describing it as “a key development.”
The preceding Friday saw a publicly broadcast meeting where Trump accused Zelenskiy of ingratitude for US aid, disrespect towards the US, and risking World War Three. These accusations have cast uncertainty over Washington’s continued support for Ukraine, which has been engaged in a three-year conflict with Russia.
speaking to reporters at a London airport after a summit with European leaders on Sunday, Zelenskiy balanced his concern over the Oval Office meeting with a desire to maintain dialog with Washington. He conveyed gratitude to European countries for their support while navigating the delicate diplomatic situation.
Zelenskiy voiced his belief that the US would not halt its assistance to Ukraine, reasoning that as “leaders of the civilized world” they would not want to aid Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, he stated his readiness for any eventuality.
“As regards salvaging the relationship, I think our relationship will continue,” Zelenskiy told reporters via a translator after the London summit.
He also noted,”I do not think it’s right when such discussions are totally open. … the format of what happened, I don’t think it brought something positive or additional to us as partners.”
Zelenskiy’s arrival in London on Saturday was marked by a warm reception from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and supportive crowds near Downing Street.
At Sunday’s summit,Starmer announced that European leaders had agreed to formulate a Ukraine peace plan to present to the US,hoping Washington would provide the security guarantees Kyiv deems essential to deter Russia.
zelenskiy emphasized Ukraine’s reliance on the US as its primary military supporter, asserting that ceasing weapon supplies would only benefit Putin. “The US are … leaders of the civilized world, and they will not help Putin,” he stated.
Konstantin Kosachev, a prominent Russian parliamentarian, dismissed the prospect of Europe successfully forging a peace plan. “And if Ukraine should count on something, it can only be on progress (if there is any to come) in Russian-American relations,” he posted on Telegram.
