Ukrainian Air Forces Down Record 76 Drones Amid Intensified Night Attack by Russia
During a nighttime attack, the enemy launched a record number of “Shahed” drones and unidentified UAVs, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.
Ukrainian defenses successfully shot down 76 drones across 17 regions. An additional 95 drones either disappeared from radar or were repelled using electronic warfare methods.
Moscow also fired four “Iskander-M” ballistic missiles at Ukraine. These missiles likely originated from the Russian regions of Voronezh and Kursk, as reported by military sources.
The defense involved the coordinated efforts of the Ukrainian Air and Air Defense Forces, including aviation units, missile units, electronic warfare technology, and mobile firefighting teams, reported the Ukrainian public media outlet “Suspilne.”
The attacks caused damage to critical infrastructure, and some private and multi-apartment buildings were affected, although there have been no reports of casualties so far.
Context:
Russia’s unjustified invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022. The Kremlin confidently predicted it would capture Kyiv in three days. However, the strong and courageous resistance from Ukrainians thwarted these plans.
After setbacks, Russia withdrew its army from the Kyiv area but continued its offensive in other regions. In the fall of 2022, the Ukrainian army successfully liberated parts of Kharkiv and Kherson, raising hopes of defeating the enemy.
However, the Ukrainian counteroffensive, starting in the summer of 2023, faced challenges. This was attributed to insufficient weapon supplies from Western allies and the establishment of strong defensive lines and extensive minefields by the Russian army.
In August 2024, reports emerged of a Ukrainian incursion into Russia’s Kursk region, marking the first time since World War II that foreign troops occupied part of Russian territory for an extended period.
Despite this, the Russian military continues to advance in the Donetsk region, gaining control over more Ukrainian villages and populated areas.
In October 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed a broader victory plan. However, Western allies viewed it with caution.
Since the fall of 2024, Russia has involved a significant number of North Korean soldiers in its military operations against Ukraine.
