The Chernobyl nuclear power⁢ plant, ‍site of the 1986 disaster, is at risk of structural collapse following a potential Russian strike, according to Petro Kotin, head of the State Agency of ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management.Kotin warned⁣ that a strike could compromise the ⁢New Safe⁢ Confinement (NSC), a ⁤massive arch⁤ built to contain the‌ damaged reactor, and possibly release radioactive material.

Kotin stated ⁢that approximately 300 small holes were created in the NSC by firefighters responding to recent events, and⁢ these breaches still require repair. ⁢ he emphasized the vulnerability of the ‌structure ‍to further attacks.

Background: ⁣Chernobyl and the‌ New Safe Confinement

The Chernobyl disaster, occurring on April 26, 1986, remains the worst nuclear ‌accident in history. ‍ The explosion and subsequent fire released massive amounts of radioactive ⁢contamination across Europe. ⁤ The original sarcophagus built to contain ⁣the reactor was deteriorating, prompting the construction of the new Safe Confinement.

The NSC, completed⁤ in 2019, is a colossal arched ⁣structure designed to prevent further release of radioactive materials and allow for the eventual dismantling of the damaged reactor. ⁤ It is 108 meters (354 ft) high, ⁢162 meters (531 ft) long, and spans 260 meters (853 ft). New Safe Confinement official website. The project cost approximately €1.5 billion, funded⁣ by an international consortium.

  • What: ‌Potential collapse of the⁤ New Safe Confinement ⁢at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
  • Where: ‍Chernobyl exclusion zone, Ukraine.
  • When: ⁤Warning issued December 23, 2025.
  • Why it matters: A collapse could⁤ release radioactive material, posing a important environmental and ‌health risk.
  • What’s⁤ next: ⁤ international monitoring and calls for ⁢increased security around the plant.

Recent History and Russian Involvement

Russian forces seized control of the ⁢Chernobyl plant at the ⁤beginning of their invasion‌ of Ukraine in February 2022, holding it for ‌several weeks before withdrawing. International Atomic⁣ Energy Agency (IAEA) statement on Ukraine. During their occupation, Russian troops disrupted safety systems and monitoring⁢ capabilities, raising concerns about a potential nuclear incident.

The IAEA has repeatedly⁣ called for increased safety and ‌security measures at Chernobyl, particularly given the ongoing conflict.‍ The agency continues ‍to monitor the situation closely.

Potential ⁤Consequences of a Collapse

A breach of the New Safe Confinement could lead to the release of radioactive dust and particles into‌ the atmosphere. The extent of‌ the contamination would depend on the severity of the damage and weather conditions. While the NSC⁣ is designed to contain a significant release,a complete collapse could overwhelm ⁣its safety
