Deepening Cooperation on European Integration and Defense
On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal held a virtual meeting to discuss critical issues surrounding Ukraine’s path toward European Union membership and enhanced collaboration in the defense sector. The leaders agreed to convene in person “at the earliest prospect” to continue these vital discussions.

A central focus of the conversation was Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to integrate with Europe. Svyrydenko affirmed Ukraine’s technical readiness to initiate the opening of the first three negotiation clusters, expressing confidence in Estonia’s support for a coordinated approach alongside Moldova. This signals a proactive stance from Ukraine in meeting the requirements for EU accession and a desire for regional alignment.
Estonia’s Robust Support for Ukraine’s Defense
Beyond European integration, the Prime Ministers addressed defense cooperation, with Ukraine expressing gratitude for Estonia’s commitment to allocating 0.3% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to support Ukraine. This represents a significant financial contribution, demonstrating Estonia’s strong stance against Russian aggression. The leaders also explored opportunities for joint defense projects and highlighted the importance of the timely delivery of a €100 million aid package comprised of products from Estonian manufacturers.
Svyrydenko emphasized the potential for expanding joint procurement efforts, especially thru the Strategic Arms for Ukraine (SAFE) mechanism, which aims to streamline and accelerate the delivery of essential military equipment and supplies. This collaborative approach underscores a shared commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
A Symbol of Solidarity on Estonia’s Independence Day
The meeting also served as an occasion for Svyrydenko to extend congratulations to Michal on Estonia’s Day of Restoration of Independence, a national holiday celebrated annually. This gesture underscores the strong bilateral relationship between the two countries and their shared values of freedom and democracy.
