Table of Contents
For Sasha and David podliashchuk, rock music isn’t just a passion – it’s a weapon. These two Ukrainian brothers have transformed their wartime experiences into a powerful force for morale, playing concerts for soldiers and civilians alike, even as the conflict rages on around them. Their story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the unifying power of music.
From Basement Shelter to Battlefield Anthems
The full-scale Russian invasion in early 2022 didn’t silence these young musicians; it amplified their resolve. While many fled, Sasha and David took their electric guitars to the family’s basement, transforming the shelter from a place of fear into a rehearsal studio.
“Our guitars,” Sasha explains, “are our weapons.”
Their mother,Olha Podliashchuk, recalls how the music continued even amidst the chaos. It became a lifeline, a way to process the trauma and offer hope. The brothers’ dedication is a powerful example of how art can flourish even in the darkest of times.
A Studio Filled with Stories of courage
The brothers’ studio isn’t just a place to create music; it’s a living memorial to the conflict. The walls are adorned with flags signed by military units and patches sent by brigades – tangible symbols of the support they receive and the sacrifices being made.
A particularly poignant gift came from a soldier who sent them a bass guitar. Tragically, that soldier is now missing in action in eastern Ukraine, a stark reminder of the human cost of war. these personal connections fuel their music and deepen their commitment to their mission.
Connecting with Soldiers Through Song
Their concerts are more than just performances; they’re communal experiences of shared grief, resilience, and hope. At a recent concert in Kyiv, a soldier with the call sign Skripal asked to sing along during one of their songs. He chose a folk-metal anthem about war, a song he and his comrades had sung to keep their spirits up during the most harrowing moments. “It’s a way to connect,to share the burden, and to remember those who are fighting,” Skripal explained.
“Light Up Your Sound”: A Message of Defiance and Hope
The finale of their concerts always features their original composition, “Light Up Your Sound.” the song encapsulates their message of defiance and unwavering hope.
“Even when it’s dark all around,” they sing, “my sound is like fire through the cold and fatigue. I will not give up. I’m playing on - playing on for fun and the morale of Ukrainians and the soldiers on the front lines.”
This isn’t just a song; it’s a declaration. It’s a promise to continue creating, to continue resisting, and to continue offering a beacon of light in a time of darkness. sasha and David Podliashchuk are proving that even in the face of unimaginable adversity, the power of music can endure – and inspire.
