Forcible displacement: The disappearance of Hrabovske’s Residents

On the night of December 19-20, 2023, the village of Hrabovske in Ukraine’s Sumy Oblast was subjected to a targeted raid by Russian forces, resulting in the disappearance of its entire civilian population. Approximately fifty residents, the vast majority of whom were elderly women, were forcibly transported to Russia, and their whereabouts remain unknown as of December 22, 2025.
Strategic Location, Persistent Conflict
Hrabovske occupies a precarious position near the Russian border, situated along a critical logistical corridor connecting the cities of Sumy and Kharkiv. this area has experienced consistent military activity throughout the conflict, making it especially perilous for remaining civilians.

Ukrainian authorities had previously issued evacuation orders for Hrabovske, but many residents chose to remain. This decision was frequently enough driven by a lack of resources – financial,logistical,or physical – to relocate,and also a perceived lack of available support. The situation highlights the difficulties faced by vulnerable populations in active war zones.
Among those forcibly taken was an 89-year-old woman, illustrating the particularly acute risk faced by the elderly and those with limited mobility in these circumstances.
The forced removal of civilians from occupied territories is a clear violation of international humanitarian law.
Lack of Details and Concerns for Well-being
Since the raid, there has been no communication from those abducted.No phone calls, no reported sightings, and no official confirmation of their detention within Russia. This complete lack of information is fueling deep anxiety among family members and raising fears for the safety and well-being of the missing residents.
The incident is currently under examination by Ukrainian authorities, who are working to establish the identities of the perpetrators and gather evidence of potential war crimes. International organizations are also monitoring the situation and calling for access to the affected areas.
