The UK Releases “Hong Kong Half-Yearly Report” Amid Chinese Backlash

The British government has released its latest “Hong Kong Half-Yearly Report,” sparking a strong response from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The report, published on September 12, has been met with criticism from Chinese officials, who claim that the UK is making “irresponsible remarks” on Hong Kong affairs.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning emphasized that since Hong Kong’s return to China, the “one country, two systems” framework has been a resounding success. The implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law and the National Security Ordinance, as well as the reform of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s electoral system, have effectively promoted Hong Kong’s transition from chaos to governance and prosperity.

Ning also stressed that Hong Kong affairs are China’s internal matters, and the British government should respect the fact that Hong Kong has been part of China for 27 years. She urged the UK to refrain from interfering in Hong Kong’s internal affairs.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated that the British government will continue to engage with, interact with, and support the people of Hong Kong. The “Hong Kong Half-Yearly Report” is the latest development in the ongoing dialogue between the UK and China regarding Hong Kong’s future.

The report’s release has sparked a renewed debate about Hong Kong’s relationship with China and the UK’s role in the region. As tensions between the two nations continue to rise, the international community is closely watching the situation unfold.
