BJP leader and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Uma Bharti wrote to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on April 12, 2026, after she nearly missed her train at the Jhansi railway station.
The incident involved the Delhi-bound Punjab Mail. According to reports, a train chain was pulled to allow Bharti to board the vehicle after she had almost missed the departure.
Claims of Scheduling Discrepancies
Bharti alleged that she had arrived at the Jhansi railway station on time. However, she claimed that the train arrived and departed before its officially scheduled time, which contributed to the difficulty in boarding.
At the time of the incident, Bharti was utilizing a battery-operated cart to navigate the station infrastructure. She stated that no human mistakes were responsible for the delay, attributing the issue instead to infrastructure problems.
To verify these claims, Bharti has requested that the CCTV cameras at the station be reviewed to confirm her arrival time and the timing of the train’s departure.
Criticism of Railway Modernization
In her communication with the railway minister, Bharti flagged what she described as insensitivity in modernisation
. She argued that the construction of modern facilities at stations lacks practical sensitivity toward passengers.
Respected Railway Minister Ji, I had previously written about the insensitivity towards passengers at Mathura Railway Station. Today, while boarding at Jhansi Railway Station with me, another incident occurred in which there was no criminal involved; rather, the lack of practical sensitivity in constructing modern facilities at stations was the cause
Uma Bharti
Bharti noted that this was not the first time she had encountered such issues, mentioning a previous similar experience at the Mathura railway station.
Official Response
While Bharti maintains that the train departed before the scheduled time, a railway officer stated that there was no delay and that the stop in Jhansi lasted five minutes.
