A woman in China has been hailed as a hero after she used an umbrella to subdue a man who was making a fuss with a weapon.
According to Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP), the incident occurred on the streets of Suzhou, a city in eastern China, on the 11th during an argument between a photographer and a female customer who was dissatisfied with his work.
A video released online shows a female tourist grabbing a female customer by the hair and pulling it, and stepping forward to hit the attacker’s hand with an umbrella.
The owner of a nearby restaurant and his staff came out with kitchen equipment such as ladles and joined in, and managed to subdue the man with the weapon. The police arrested the man, a photographer, and they are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
The injured woman was taken to hospital. The woman who used the umbrella to stop the man’s attack was said to be Liu Yang, from Chongqing, southwest China.
Liu Yang explained the situation at the time, saying, “Suddenly the man started attacking me and I felt responsible because I was nearby.”
He added, “If something terrible had happened to the woman who was attacked, I would have felt guilty for the rest of my life.”
The shop owner, who later joined the woman in subduing the man, is 33 years old and a veteran who served for 8 years.
He said, “I hit the attacker’s neck with a ladle, and the victim managed to run away. Afterwards, the attacker tried to attack me.” He added that he felt afraid when facing the knife, but his instinct to protect others took priority. He praised the female tourist holding the umbrella as “very brave.”

Netizens have left comments such as “China’s Good Samaritan,” “You showed what true courage and justice are,” and ”Because there are people like you, the world is still a place worth living in.”
