Unknown Mortal Orchestra Announces ‘Curse’ EP, Shares New Single
Updated May 28, 2025
Unknown Mortal Orchestra (UMO), the musical project helmed by ruban Nielson, is set to release a new EP titled Curse on June 18 via Jagjaguwar. Along with the announcement, UMO has unveiled the first single from the EP, “Boys with the Characteristics of Wolves.” The new release marks Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s second project this year, following the instrumental EP IC-02 Bogotá in March.
Curse represents nielson’s first collection of non-instrumental songs since the 2023 double album, V. For this project, Nielson found inspiration in Italian horror cinema from the 1970s and 80s, exploring themes of confronting “the void.” The new single, “boys with the Characteristics of Wolves,” features driving drums and builds tension toward a chorus reminiscent of Black Sabbath.
The accompanying music video, directed by Nielson, adds to the song’s dark atmosphere.
In the hearts of men there are sometimes goodnesses hidden but significant, which would be the difference in times of woe between finding oneself at the mercy of a monster or a more heroic creature. For the sake of sanity we can fool ourselves into believing these silver slivers of morality are visible from the outside, even when we know thay aren’t. And anyway, so much of what we believe we can see from the outside is a mirage, especially these days.
In the clownish, happy-go-lucky soil of lies and chaos, a silly kind of music can grow; a senseless laughter, and we can amuse ourselves with it, however darkly. We can dance with lost minds and howl in valiant hysteria as the stormtroopers of death, confused and incredulous, pile us or those we love into their meat wagons.
