A United Nations-mandated high-level conference in New York on September 30th aims to galvanize international attention towards finding lasting solutions for teh Rohingya crisis and the plight of other minorities in Myanmar.
The Rohingya Crisis: A Timeline of Displacement
The current crisis stems from a long history of discrimination and violence against the Rohingya, a Muslim minority group in Myanmar. The most meaningful wave of displacement began on August 25, 2017, following attacks by the Arakan rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) against Myanmar security forces. this triggered a brutal military crackdown, leading to widespread human rights abuses.
According to the United Nations, more than 700,000 Rohingya fled to neighboring Bangladesh as a result of this violence (UNHCR). They joined existing refugee populations in the Cox’s Bazar district, where thousands had already sought refuge from earlier waves of persecution.
UN Efforts and the Special envoy
The upcoming high-level conference, mandated by the United Nations General Assembly, is intended to renew international focus on finding “durable solutions” to the Rohingya crisis (UN Secretary-General’s Statement, August 22, 2025). UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric emphasized the urgency of the situation.
the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar is actively engaging with all stakeholders to end the ongoing civil conflict and support a Myanmar-led political process. This process, the UN hopes, will facilitate the voluntary, safe, dignified, and sustainable return of the Rohingya to Myanmar.
Challenges to Repatriation and Humanitarian Concerns
Repatriation efforts have been hampered by a lack of trust, ongoing security concerns in Rakhine State, and the absence of guarantees for the Rohingya’s rights and safety. Myanmar’s military coup in February 2021 further elaborate the situation, exacerbating the civil conflict and hindering progress towards a resolution.
