Recent Violence and UN Response
An overnight assault on September 11th represents the latest escalation in a series of brutal incidents and ongoing gang violence that has gripped Haiti since last year.United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed “heartfelt condolences” to the families of the victims and urged Haitian authorities to pursue justice, according to a statement issued by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric.
Dujarric stated that the Secretary-General is “alarmed by the levels of violence rocking Haiti” and called on UN Member States to expedite support for the Multinational Security Support mission, intended to assist the Haitian National Police.
Just two weeks prior, on September 13th, Guterres addressed the UN Security Council, describing a grim situation in Haiti. He warned that “state authority is crumbling” as armed groups strengthen their control over Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas.
This tightening grip is forcing families to flee their homes and disrupting daily life throughout the country.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
Haiti is currently facing a deepening humanitarian crisis, with six million people in need of aid and 1.3 million displaced. Despite the urgent need, less than 10 percent of the $908 million appeal has been funded. Guterres described the situation as “shamefully overlooked and woefully underfunded,” warning that 1.7 million people may not receive any assistance at all.
