Gulf States seek Stronger ⁢UN Cooperation via draft Resolution

NEW YORK – The Gulf⁣ Group ‍at the‍ United Nations has introduced a draft resolution to the General Assembly, advocating for increased cooperation between the Cooperation Council for⁣ the Arab States⁣ of the Gulf (GCC) ‍and the UN system. this move underscores the growing partnership and its importance on the international stage.

Ambassador Tariq ⁤Al-Bannai,the ⁣permanent representative of Kuwait to the UN,speaking on behalf of the Gulf Group,addressed the General Assembly on Monday. He stated the draft resolution⁣ aims to build a‍ “sustainable and systematic strategic partnership” founded on shared principles between the⁢ UN and the GCC.

The proposed resolution seeks to bolster peace-building efforts,strengthen the GCC’s capabilities in conflict prevention,mediation,and crisis management,and contribute to sustainable development goals through regional partnerships that enhance international peace and security. This enhanced UN cooperation is seen as vital.

The draft resolution, titled “Cooperation between the United Nations and the Cooperation Council⁤ for the Arab States of the Gulf,” requests UN Secretary-General antonio Guterres to submit a report to the General ⁢Assembly’s⁤ 80th session⁤ on the resolution’s implementation. Al-Bannai emphasized this reflects‍ the commitment to advancing the institutional partnership.

Al-Bannai highlighted the 44th anniversary of the GCC’s founding,noting its role as “a basic pillar of stability and prosperity”⁣ in⁣ the region. He described the GCC‍ as a regional association focused on enhancing coordination,⁣ integration, and‍ interdependence among its member states ⁣in political, economic, and security domains.

The draft resolution also calls for strengthened institutional cooperation between the UN Secretariat and the GCC, including ⁢annual high-level strategic meetings. It encourages building⁤ institutional capabilities in prevention, ⁢mediation, preventive diplomacy, early warning, and crisis management through joint⁣ training programs and technical support.

Moreover, the resolution emphasizes exchanging best practices in mediation and peaceful conflict resolution, supporting‍ preemptive dialog in regional crises, and holding regular expert-level meetings to monitor regional developments and coordinate responses to security threats.

Al-Bannai characterized the growing cooperation between the UN and the GCC as aligned with international trends aimed at strengthening ties between global and regional institutions. The project is⁤ viewed as “the beginning ⁢of a new chapter of joint cooperation,” establishing a more strategic and sustainable partnership based on shared values and priorities.
