The United Nations Security Council, the UN body responsible for global peace and security, will see new members serve until the end of 2027.
These incoming members will work alongside the five non-permanent members elected the previous year: Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia.Their terms expire in 2026.
The Security council is comprised of 15 members. Five are permanent – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States – each holding veto power. The General Assembly elects 10 non-permanent members for two-year terms.
Elections occur annually via secret ballot. Seats are allocated by regional group, and candidates require a two-thirds majority vote from the 193-member General Assembly for election to the UN Security Council.
