UN Envoy Meets wiht Syrian Officials, Pushes for Political Solution and Humanitarian Aid
Damascus, Syria – Geir O. Pedersen, the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, met with Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus on Sunday, emphasizing the need for a political solution to the ongoing conflict and increased humanitarian aid for the war-torn nation.

“We must get political processes going that include all Syrians,” Pedersen said upon arriving in Damascus. “The process must obviously be led by the Syrians themselves.”
He also called for a just process that holds perpetrators of atrocities accountable,while cautioning against revenge.
Pedersen further urged the lifting of sanctions against Syria, arguing that they hinder the country’s reconstruction efforts.
“We hope to see a swift end to the sanctions so that we can see real support for the rebuilding of Syria,” Pedersen stated earlier on Sunday. “Syria has been through an enormous humanitarian crisis. We must ensure that Syria receives increased and immediate humanitarian assistance.”
Large parts of Syria’s major cities remain in ruins after 13 years of devastating conflict. Reconstruction efforts have been hampered by sanctions imposed to pressure the Assad regime into negotiating a political settlement with the opposition.
