The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo has crossed 2,500 deaths while spreading exponentially across a geographic area larger than France, according to United Nations officials. Julien Harneis, the UN’s principal Ebola coordinator, announced during an August 21, 2026 press conference in Geneva that half of those fatalities occurred within a compressed 20-day window, outpacing the international response and straining containment operations.

Rapid Geographic Spread and Death Toll

According to reporting from Le Monde and Radio France Internationale, the current outbreak has already surpassed the total death toll of the 2018–2020 epidemic in eastern Congo within just three months. That previous crisis resulted in numerous deaths out of thousands of confirmed cases, based on World Health Organization data cited by Le Monde.

Mr. Harneis stated from Bunia, DRC, that the virus is now active across a territory exceeding the land area of France.

The World Health Organization notes that Ebola transmits through contact with bodily fluids and causes severe hemorrhagic fever. Over the past 50 years, the virus has killed numerous people across the African continent.

Vaccine Trials and Medical Challenges

The outbreak is driven by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which no specific, licensed vaccine or treatment currently exists, according to Le Monde. In response to the crisis, 70,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine—which is licensed to target the Zaire strain—have been shipped to the DRC to evaluate its impact against the Bundibugyo variant through ongoing clinical trials.

Public health operations face significant hurdles beyond virological challenges. According to Le Monde, the containment effort is underfunded, criticized for organizational slowness, and hindered by local distrust among affected communities.

Public Health Measures and Regional Concerns

Local civil society groups in Ituri are demanding strict health guarantees before schools reopen. Educational authorities have already shifted instruction to remote learning in nearly 2,890 schools to curb transmission among children and staff.

UN officials emphasize that international backing is vital to prevent the localized health emergency from escalating into a wider regional and international threat.
