hilarious Squirrel Photo Wins Top Prize in Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards
London, England — A photo of a squirrel caught in a hilariously awkward pose has been crowned the winner of the 2023 Nikon Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards.
Titled “Stuck Squirrel,” the winning image by Italian photographer Milko Marchetti beat out nearly 9,000 entries – the highest number in the competition’s 10-year history. The photo captures the moment a red squirrel attempts to squeeze into its tree hollow, with its hind legs splayed out at a comical angle.
“I’ve taken countless photos of squirrels in various situations over the years in Italy, but this one struck me as especially funny and in a very unusual position,” Marchetti said. “It’s the exact moment the squirrel separates its hind legs from the trunk to enter its hiding place.”
A panel of judges selected the overall winner from a shortlist of 45 finalists, chosen from thousands of entries submitted by photographers from around the world.
Other notable winners include a photo of a frog seemingly trapped inside a bubble and a comical shot of a sheepshead fish chasing after a bald eagle.
The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards aim to highlight the beauty and humor found in the animal kingdom while promoting wildlife conservation.
