Unair Alumni Win International Awards for Bidaah Research
Aidatul’s Critical Analysis of “Bidaah” Wins Second Place, Illuminating Religious Exploitation
Surabaya, Tempo – Aidatul, a distinguished graduate from Universitas Airlangga (Unair), has secured second place for her insightful research and critique of the Malaysian drama series “Bidaah.” Her work delves into the series’ bold portrayal of religious preservation within insular communities, raising critical questions about the rise of religious deviations that often elude public scrutiny.
Unveiling Hidden Power Dynamics Through Film
Aidatul’s research highlights how “Bidaah” serves as a powerful medium to expose the subtle yet pervasive ways in which power operates, often masked by the veneer of spirituality. “Through film as a popular medium, we can uncover how power operates symbolically and hidden within the guise of spirituality,” Aidatul explained.
She believes that research driven by intellectual unease possesses a greater capacity to foster public awareness. “This isn’t just about religious representation, but about how religion is exploited to subjugate human reason, body, and will,” she asserted.
A Call for Impactful Critical Discourse
The 2024 Unair Outstanding Graduate expressed her aspiration for her analytical findings to transcend mere academic documentation, aiming rather to catalyze impactful critical discourse. “This achievement isn’t just about prestige, but about validation of hard work and the courage to think critically to side with the oppressed,” Aidatul stated.
Dual Analytical Approaches to “Bidaah”
Aidatul and her team employed two distinct methodologies in their complete analysis of “Bidaah.”
Critical Discourse Analysis: Deconstructing Ideological Domination
The first study leveraged Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis theory. This approach meticulously examined how language, symbols, and visual elements within the drama are strategically employed as instruments of ideological domination. The aim was to dissect the underlying messages and power structures embedded within the narrative.
islamic Theology and Jurisprudence: Critiquing Deviant Doctrines
the second study adopted an analytical framework rooted in Islamic theology and jurisprudence. This perspective was crucial for critiquing the deviant religious doctrines depicted in the film.By applying these theological lenses, the research sought to identify and challenge the misinterpretations and distortions of religious teachings presented in “Bidaah.”
in-depth Textual and Visual Examination
Both studies were conducted through intensive textual and visual analysis of each scene in “Bidaah.” this granular approach allowed Aidatul and her team to thoroughly explore the multifaceted ways in which religious authority is wielded as a tool of domination, thereby shaping deviant doctrines within the broader context of social discourse.
