Uncaged Innovations Launches Bio-Based Leather Alternative, Elevate

Uncaged Innovations has launched Elevate, a new bio-based luxury leather alternative. This material aims to provide a sustainable option for accessories like handbags, watch straps, and jewelry.

The first products using Elevate will come from a group called Uncaged Collective, which includes 10 global independent brands. Stephanie Downs, the cofounder, stated that these nimble brands can quickly bring the new material to market, sometimes in just two months.

Brands involved include Stow London from the U.K. and Humo Estudio from Argentina, both of which have traditionally used animal skins. Vegan brands such as Kaila Katherine, Sans Beast, Melina Butcher, and Sentient are also participating.

Elevate aims to elevate the leather alternative market, reflecting a shift towards more sustainable materials. Uncaged Innovations focused on working with independent brands to expedite product development.

The advantages of Elevate include a significant reduction in environmental impact. Compared to animal leather, it emits 95% fewer greenhouse gases, uses 93% less water, and consumes 72% less energy.

Elevate consists of grain proteins combined with plant-based elements. The material can be produced on existing machinery, making it easier for manufacturers to adopt.

Uncaged Innovations plans to scale production, partnering with factories in New York and scouting additional sites in Europe. The first Elevate products will hit stores in January 2025. A collaboration with a major luxury brand is also expected soon.

Feedback from initial products will inform future development, enhancing the material’s qualities.
