Enhancing Durian Quality in Dak Lak Province: A Path to Sustainability
Dak Lak province, a major durian producer, faces challenges in maintaining product quality. Issues such as inadequate pest management, scattered and small growing areas, and non-compliance with production and processing procedures hinder the industry’s growth.
Addressing Quality Concerns
To improve durian quality, farmers must shift their focus from quantity to quality. They need to understand technical processes, manage diseases effectively, and use the right medicines. Industry stakeholders must unite to build and maintain product quality, ensuring a strong export market.
Tran Van Thang, Director of Krong Pac Green Agricultural Cooperative, emphasizes the importance of considering customer needs and ensuring quality products for long-term market success.
Supporting Farmers
Authorities must collaborate with scientists to develop standard technical procedures for durian cultivation in the Krong Pac region and Dak Lak province. This will enable farmers to establish sustainable orchards, including windbreak forest belts and drainage systems.
Dr. Phan Viet Ha, Deputy Director of the Central Highlands Agricultural and Forestry Science and Technology Institute, stresses the importance of integrated crop management and choosing suitable varieties to withstand harsh climates and pests.
Standardizing Processes
The Dak Lak Provincial People’s Committee has proposed the development of National Standards for durian. Standardizing processes from input to harvesting and post-harvest stages is crucial for the industry’s growth.
Professor, Doctor Tran Van Hau notes that Vietnam must build technical cultivation processes and industry standards to compete with other major durian producers like Thailand.
Local Initiatives
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dak Lak province prioritizes product quality and food hygiene and safety issues in developing the durian industry. The province is developing a project to create concentrated, highly specialized durian production areas, where farmers can link together, join cooperatives, and produce according to standards.
By improving product quality and complying with importing countries’ requirements, Dak Lak province can promote exports and ensure sustainability for the durian industry.
