Uncovering Hidden Colonies: Groundbreaking Discoveries in Ant Species (Formicidae) with New State Records
Updated List of Ants in Alabama: New State Records and Insights
Introduction
Alabama is home to a diverse range of ant species, with a previous review in 2005 documenting 155 species and one hybrid. This updated list adds 38 additional species, bringing the total to 193 species and one hybrid.
Research Findings
Our research combines published and unpublished records, as well as revised identifications, to provide a comprehensive list of ant species in Alabama. Notably, 32 species and one hybrid are considered exotic to the state.
Conservation and Invasion Risks
We present county-level maps of species richness and collection efforts for native and exotic ants. These maps highlight areas of special concern for conservation and invasion risks, emphasizing the need for continued monitoring and research.
