The archaeologists of the National Museum of Banat have completed the excavation and research work in the seventh archaeological site on the future railway route Timișoara Est – Lugoj.

Last week, they emerged with traces that could change everything we understood about the ancient history of the Romanians.

7 thousand year old prayers, brought to light

The institute’s experts have documented and collected traces and historical evidence dating from the early Neolithic period (around 5950-5850 BC) up to modern times. The site at Izvin-Obiectiv 6 (Recaș town) stood out for the identification of a metallurgical area which probably dates from the middle of the 1st millennium AD.

“The structures identified will help us better understand the stages of iron processing in the Banat plain area, from the production of the coal needed to reduce the iron ore, to the actual processing of the resulting ingots.

Among the metallurgical structures found, a furnace used to reduce iron ore was selected for in situ sampling and later transported to the Banat National Museum’s stores for research and possible display in one of the exhibitions in the future,” wrote representatives of the museum on Facebook.

Age of Broz in Romania

The Bronze Age began in Romania around 3500 BC. and was characterized by the development of metallurgical technologies, agriculture and fortified settlements. During this period, bronze tools, weapons and ornaments were produced, and local societies evolved into more complex structures with clear social distinctions. Important archaeological discoveries, such as the treasures from Perșinari or Pecica, give a detailed picture of the cultures that lived in the current territory of Romania.

During the Bronze Age, Romania experienced significant economic and cultural development, including advances in animal husbandry and artistic production. Cultures such as Wietenberg and Žuto Brdo – Gârla Mare played an important role, the latter being known for its intricate clay sculptures. Various important cultures emerged, such as the Baden-Coțofeni, Verbicioara, and Ottomans, noted for their funerary customs and unique artefacts, including bronze ornaments.

Religious practices during this period included solar cults, with symbols such as concentric circles and the swastika, often depicted on pottery and metal objects. Archaeological excavations have revealed a number of Bronze Age sanctuaries and ritual objects, including small axes, related to spiritual and funerary practices.
