Remembering the 9/11 Attacks
Today marks the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 attacks, a day when terrorists hijacked American airliners and crashed them into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York.
The mastermind behind the attacks was Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda, who was later killed by American forces in Pakistan.
Interestingly, Osama bin Laden had a fascination with football, particularly with the English club Arsenal. According to author Adam Robinson’s biography, “Bin Laden: Behind the Mask of Terrorism”, bin Laden attended Arsenal matches in 1990 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in the 1993–1994 season. He was a great admirer of Arsenal legend George Graham.
Following the revelation of bin Laden’s allegiance to Arsenal, a club spokesman stated, “We have seen the reports in the press and it is clear that he will not be welcome at Highbury in the future.”
