World Happiness Report Reveals Surprising Trends
The pursuit of happiness is a universal goal, but what contributes to a happy life? The World Happiness Report, a joint publication by Gallup, the Oxford Institute for Wellbeing, and the United Nations, evaluates various factors that impact happiness, including financial stability, crime rates, and access to quality medical services.
The 2024 report reveals that the United States has dropped eight places to 23rd in the global rankings, marking the first time it has fallen out of the top 20. Nordic countries, such as Finland, Denmark, and Iceland, dominate the top spots, while Korea ranks 52nd.
In the US, the World Population Review combines 31 indicators, including working hours, job security, and mental illness, to determine the happiness index and rankings by state. Hawaii tops the list with 66.3 points, followed by New Jersey in 5th place with 61.71 points, and New York in 23rd place with 53.36 points.
A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that Hawaii has the lowest rate of adult depression, at 12.7%, followed closely by New Jersey. These findings suggest that a combination of factors contributes to the overall happiness of a population.
Understanding the factors that influence happiness can help policymakers and individuals make informed decisions to improve overall well-being. By examining the data and trends, we can work towards creating a happier, healthier society.
