Retiring undefeated as a world champion is one of the rarest achievements in professional boxing. While many fighters maintain perfect records early in their careers, very few manage to secure a world title and exit the sport without a single loss on their record.

As of March 2026, 16 male boxing champions have finished their careers undefeated. This group includes fighters recognized by modern sanctioning bodies such as the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO, as well as those recognized by The Ring magazine and public acclamation prior to the era of formal sanctioning bodies.

Modern Era Undefeated Champions

Floyd Mayweather Jr. Is among the most prominent names to retire without defeat, finishing his career with a record of 50-0. Another notable addition to this list is Terence Crawford, who retired with a record of 42-0.

Crawford’s career saw him capture titles across multiple weight classes. He held the WBO lightweight title from 2014 to 2015 and the WBO light welterweight title from 2015 to 2017. He later secured the WBC and The Ring titles from 2016 to 2018, and the WBA (Super) and IBF titles in 2017.

From 2018 to 2024, Crawford held the WBO welterweight title, later adding the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, and The Ring titles from 2023 to 2024. His final title run occurred in the light middleweight division, where he held the WBA title from 2024 to 2025 and won the WBO interim title before vacating both to move up to super middleweight.

Joe Calzaghe also retired undefeated with a record of 46-0. Calzaghe held the WBO super middleweight title from 1997 to 2008, defending it 21 times. He also held the IBF title in 2006 and The Ring title from 2006 to 2008. In 2008, he moved up to light heavyweight, winning The Ring title before retiring and vacating the belt.

Historical and Heavyweight Milestones

In the heavyweight division, Rocky Marciano remains a primary example of an undefeated champion. Marciano retired between 1947 and 1955 with a perfect record of 49-0, including 43 knockouts.

Earlier in boxing history, Jimmy Barry achieved an undefeated status as a bantamweight world champion from 1894 to 1899. Barry finished his career with a record of 61-0-10 with one no contest, defending his title six times during a period when bantamweight weight limits in the United States were shifting.

Other Notable Undefeated Titleholders

The list of champions who retired without a loss extends across various weight classes and eras, including:

  • Ricardo Lopez
  • Sven Ottke
  • Edwin Valero
  • Dmitry Pirog
  • Mihai Leu
  • Harry Simon, who was a WBO Junior Middleweight Champion between 1994 and 2016
  • Terry Marsh, who retired with a record of 26-0-1 after winning the IBF Jr. Welterweight Title in April 2007
  • Jack McAuliffe
  • Pichit Sitbangprachan
  • Ji-won Kim

In women’s boxing, Laila Ali retired undefeated with a record of 24-0, including 21 wins by knockout or TKO, competing from 1999 to 2007.

Other female champions who have maintained undefeated records include Natascha Ragosina, Nicola Adams, Kara Ro, and Wang Ya Nan.

Context of Undefeated Records

While many fighters are listed as undefeated, there is a distinction between those who retired as champions and those who simply never lost. For instance, fighters like Billy Collins Jr. Are noted for having perfect records before their careers were cut short.

The achievement is rare because most world champions eventually face a defeat as they continue to defend their titles against the top contenders in their division. The transition between weight classes, as seen with Crawford and Calzaghe, adds a layer of difficulty in maintaining a perfect record while pursuing championships in different divisions.
