Mercedes F1 Representative: Antonelli to Face Increased Scrutiny in Rookie Season
Toto Wolff admits Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s rookie F1 campaign in 2025 will be under much more scrutiny than George Russell’s debut campaign. He said Antonelli began his career with Mercedes rather than a midfield team, making the teenager’s mistakes “more obvious”.
While George Russell could afford to make his first F1 mistakes under the radar of Williams, Antonelli will face the pressure of being part of a top team from day one.
Antonelli made his official F1 debut in Friday’s opening practice for the Italian Grand Prix. However, the Italian driver had little time to spare as he crashed just 10 minutes into the session.
Despite the accident, Mercedes confirmed on Saturday that the young driver will join the Brackley-based team alongside Russell in 2025.
Mercedes’ Driver Development Programme
Both drivers came through Mercedes’ driver development programme, but their paths to the team were very different.
“I think the biggest credit goes to Gwen[LaGrew]and his team who runs our academy because they were able to observe us from a very young age,” Wolff explained.
“As Mercedes we would not have been able to find Kimi. He is 11 years old and we have seen his successes on the track and of course his work with the karting team. It was great to see him come into my office wearing his best suit and giving a PowerPoint presentation.”
“It was Gwen who found you, so I’m delighted to be able to support two Mercedes junior drivers in 2024.”
Comparing Antonelli and Russell’s Career Paths
But the main difference between Antonelli and Russell’s career paths lies in their level of focus.
When Russell joined Williams, the team was struggling at the back of the grid and receiving little attention from the media and fans, allowing Russell to make mistakes.
“Of course we may have learned a lesson. George may have stayed too long at Williams,” Wolff said. “He is Williams and there are some mistakes he made because he didn’t get much attention.”
“Now that he’s at Mercedes, his mistakes will be even more evident because he’s grown so quickly.”
A Big Gamble for Mercedes
It’s a big gamble, but Wolff is confident in Antonelli’s potential and the team’s investment in the future.
“We are fully prepared to invest and it is really fantastic to have two people from the Mercedes junior team doing well in F1.”
“You can see it in today’s junior teams under 10, racing miniature cars or karts.”
Russell’s Support for Antonelli
Russell also expressed his support for the young driver, but the British driver, who has won two F1 races, admitted that Antonelli’s youth and lack of experience mean he faces a steep learning curve. However, he is confident in the young driver’s speed.
“When I think back to when I was 18, it’s clear that I had a lot to learn,” Russell said.
“But I think it’s just a matter of whether the driver has the speed or not. I’m very confident that you have the speed.”
Russell, who made mistakes during his time at Williams, stressed that mistakes are part of a driver’s development.
“Everyone makes mistakes in their development, it’s part of life and this sport. I’m sure Kimi will learn from FP1 in Monza.”
“He definitely has the speed to bring Mercedes back to the front row of the grid from next year. That’s why he will race alongside me next year.”
