SAINT-DENIS-DE-MÉRÉ, France –⁣ In an unusual medical case, three siblings from Saint-Denis-de-Méré, a town in the Calvados department⁢ of Normandy, France, are battling⁢ the same type of brain tumor. Kimy, 12, Leny, 9, adn Taïs, 14, have all ⁢been diagnosed with tumors affecting⁢ the pineal gland, according to thier mother, Christelle Morice.

Morice⁣ initially learned of Kimy’s condition, which included pre-existing eye issues, before Leny and Taïs were diagnosed in 2024.

Kimy’s ‍Early Struggles

Kimy’s health challenges began early in life. “It started with ocular rosacea when she was 18 months old,” Morice⁤ said,⁤ describing the eye disease that causes inflammation and discomfort.

The degenerative nature of the rosacea leads to eye⁢ irritation, with recurring⁣ episodes of blepharitis and keratitis. Kimy also experiences⁢ photophobia during these episodes and requires ongoing treatment.

at age 5, doctors discovered the brain tumor, along with syringomyelia, a spinal cord disorder, ⁣and dorsal kyphosis, necessitating the use of a brace.

Leny’s Diagnosis ‍prompted by‍ School Concerns

Leny’s diagnosis came after concerns were raised ⁢by his teacher. According ⁣to Morice, the teacher noticed Leny was struggling⁣ academically.

The teacher told us it was‍ no longer possible. Leny was in big academic difficulty. He no longer followed. For reading and writing,it’s very elaborate.

Christelle Morice

Following⁤ the teacher’s observations, medical tests revealed abnormal hormone levels, leading to a brain MRI that ⁢confirmed the tumor. “They discovered an abnormal ⁤level of hormones and we⁢ went to do a brain MRI within three days, it ⁣was fast,” Morice stated.

Taïs Experiences Visual Disturbances

Taïs’s tumor was discovered two⁤ months after Leny’s, in March ⁣2024. She experienced visual disturbances⁢ during a class. “In the middle of a course, during a check, she started to see ⁢troubled and colorful spots. She ⁤lost foot and panicked,” Morice ‍recounted. A subsequent headache led to an immediate examination at the center Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU), where doctors diagnosed ophthalmic migraines with aura.

An MRI revealed the same type of tumor as her siblings.”I sometimes ‍have crises. I sometimes see ‍blur or colored spots and it gives me ⁢the⁤ head. It can happen at any time,” Taïs⁢ explained.

Morice said that the family is unsure if the condition is genetic. ⁤Two other older‍ brothers ⁢have ‍not yet undergone MRI scans, and neither ‍parent has⁢ exhibited symptoms.

Impact on Daily Life

The pineal gland, affected by the tumors, plays a crucial role in regulating⁤ the sleep ⁣cycle through melatonin⁢ secretion. This has a important ‍impact on the ⁤children’s daily lives.

The hardest ⁣part is the remarks of⁢ people who do not understand. They say “they are sick but it ⁢cannot be‍ seen”. We want to tell them “take our place”.

Christelle⁢ Morice

“I am told all the time ‘your children are tired’,” Morice said. “they are,‍ but they can ‍do nothing…”⁢ the children ⁤experience restless ⁤sleep and are prone to illness. ⁣Kimy, in particular,⁤ takes longer ⁣to recover ⁢from illnesses.

Concentration difficulties also affect the siblings. ‍Morice noted that‍ Taïs,⁤ a third-year student, spends extensive hours ‍studying with limited results.

Gymnastics Provides Solace

gymnastics provides ⁣a vital outlet for‍ the children. Kimy, due to her back condition, now focuses on swimming,a practice recommended by doctors.

To support the family, the⁢ association “Stars in⁤ kimy’s Eyes” has been renamed “The Trio of Hope.”

Solidarity, ⁢little words,⁤ smiles make us stand up.

Christelle Morice

Morice emphasizes the importance of maintaining ⁢normalcy for her children. “We do⁤ everything‍ so that ⁤it does not be ⁤seen in everyday⁢ life, at school such⁣ as,” she said. “They are well supported by their friends, and the college helps us well.”

The children ‍are under⁢ the care of the Centre François Baclesse in Caen, where doctors are monitoring the tumors’ progression. The cause of the ⁢tumors is currently unknown.
