Understanding the Quad-Demic: Essential Protection Tips for UK Residents

Understanding the Quad-Demic: Essential Protection Tips for UK Residents

November 29, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

Four illnesses are spreading in the UK this winter, leading to the term “quad-demic.” The illnesses include COVID-19, flu, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and norovirus. The UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) tracks their activity levels weekly.

What is the ‘quad-demic’?

The “quad-demic” refers to the four viral illnesses that peak at different times each winter. Dr. David Lloyd from the NHS states that the risk of catching all four illnesses rises during this season.

Recent UKHSA figures show increased levels of flu, RSV, and norovirus, while COVID-19 levels remain stable.

Symptoms to Look For

The illnesses share some similarities but exhibit distinct symptoms:

  • Flu: High temperature, body aches, dry cough, sore throat, headache, and fatigue.
  • COVID-19: High temperature, altered smell or taste, shortness of breath, exhaustion, or a new persistent cough.
  • RSV: Runny or blocked nose, cough, sneezing, and tiredness.
  • Norovirus: Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, body aches, and high temperature.

RSV is circulating at medium levels, leading to increased hospital admissions. Flu activity is also rising with a positivity rate of 6.5%. Norovirus cases have reached nearly double the average compared to the past five seasons.

Dr. Lloyd notes that winter illnesses are more common as people gather indoors.

How to Protect Yourself

Vaccination can significantly reduce the risk of illness. Dr. Lloyd states that getting vaccinated can halve the chances of contracting any of the four illnesses. The NHS offers vaccines for flu, COVID-19, and RSV.

The new RSV vaccine aims to protect vulnerable groups, like young children and older adults with health conditions.

From September to mid-November, the NHS administered approximately 3.4 million vaccinations weekly.

How to Stop the Spread

To prevent the spread of germs, wash hands regularly. Avoid close contact with others if you feel unwell. If you have diarrhea or vomiting, stay home for 48 hours after symptoms stop.

Dr. Lloyd advises that wearing a mask can help reduce transmission.

The NHS encourages you to seek medical advice if you are concerned about symptoms, either by contacting your GP or calling 111. For serious symptoms, call 999 or visit A&E.

By getting vaccinated and practicing good hygiene, we can help everyone stay healthy this winter.
