Understanding the Role of Internet Exchange Points in Nigeria’s DNS Industry

November 30, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Tech

The Role of Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) in the DNS Industry

At the NiRA Tech Convergence 1.0 event, Uchechukwu Ugwuanyi discussed the significance of Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) for the Domain Name System (DNS) and the tech sector. He highlighted the importance of understanding Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and IXPs to grasp their roles in network communications.

Ugwuanyi emphasized that analyzing the ISP ecosystem helps explain the crucial functions IXPs serve. He provided an example, imagining a region like Lagos with only one service provider, to frame the discussion around the infrastructure’s impact on connectivity.

Functions of IXPs in the DNS Industry

During the conference, Ugwuanyi explored how IXPs enhance the efficiency of DNS operations. The Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN) connects over 128 networks and averages over 800 Gbps in traffic. IXPN operates in major data centers across Nigeria, including Abuja and other cities, facilitating swift inter-network communications.

He noted that connections via IXPN achieve speeds of less than one millisecond, while those through submarine cables can take over 9,200 milliseconds. This dramatic latency reduction illustrates the benefit of IXPs for faster internet access and reliable DNS resolutions.

Economic Benefits of IXPs

Ugwuanyi pointed out the significant cost savings IXPs provide. On average, ISPs exchange 50-60% of their traffic at IXPN. He compared the cost of a one Mbps transit connection through IXPN (N200,000) to international transit (around N1.2 million). This local traffic exchange results in substantial savings for service providers, especially outside cities like Lagos, where international transit costs can exceed N4 million.

Enhancing Security and Compliance

Another vital role of IXPs is in improving the security of internet traffic. By keeping traffic local, IXPs reduce the number of intermediaries, making data less vulnerable to attacks such as Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS). Additionally, IXPs help service providers comply with regulations regarding data localization, as some laws require user data to remain within Nigeria.

Ugwuanyi concluded by emphasizing the importance of IXPs in enhancing network performance while reducing costs and improving security. They play an essential role in the technological infrastructure of Nigeria, contributing to better internet service efficiency and reliability.
