The Vitamin D Dilemma in India

Sunshine can lift your spirits and is good for your health. Just 30 minutes in the sun each day can strengthen your bones, boost your immune system, and provide essential vitamin D. However, despite having 300-330 sunny days a year, between 50% to 94% of people in India are vitamin D deficient.

This deficiency has led to a surge in vitamin D supplements. Some people think these products are the answer, but experts warn that most adults only need a small daily dose of about 10 micrograms or 400 IU. This is the recommendation from the Indian Council of Medical Research and the UK’s National Health Service.

What do pharmacies offer? Many stock high-dose supplements, including 60,000 IU pills and even 600,000 IU injections meant to last a year. These mega doses can lead to serious health issues, such as kidney stones and weakened bones.

Conflicting Advice on Vitamin D Levels

Understanding what constitutes a “normal” vitamin D level is challenging. Different organizations provide varying guidelines:

  • The ICMR in India states that levels over 9 ng/ml are acceptable.
  • The Endocrine Society in the US recommends levels above 30 ng/ml.
  • Some Indian researchers propose 13.5 ng/ml as acceptable, but many labs still caution if levels drop below 30 ng/ml.

Determining whether you are genuinely vitamin D deficient is complex. The internet is filled with claims linking vitamin D to various health issues, from hair loss to cancer. This information can be overwhelming.

Choosing the Right Medical Advice

Consulting a qualified doctor is essential, but not all practitioners are reliable. Some may recommend unnecessary treatments for profit. Recent scandals, like those involving unnecessary heart surgeries in Gujarat, highlight this risk.

This issue extends beyond vitamin D. In healthcare, many new drugs receive excessive hype. For instance, some diabetes medications are promoted for weight loss, but the weight often returns after stopping the drug. Similarly, some pills claim to mimic the benefits of running without any physical activity.

A Balanced Approach to Health

Instead of relying solely on quick fixes, prioritize fundamental health practices. Spend time outdoors in the sun, maintain a balanced diet, and stay active. Nature provides solutions, so you don’t need to depend on expensive supplements. Keep things simple and focus on what truly benefits your health.
